School Closed Thru May

April 02, 2020

Dear Glendora Community,

The governor, the state superintendent of public instruction, and the Los Angeles County superintendent of schools have made it clear that the safest place to be is home during the COVID-19 pandemic and have called for school district closures. With that in mind, our campuses, as well as others statewide, will remain physically closed for the remainder of the academic school year. As we complete our first week of Distance Learning in Glendora, I want to assure you that the well being of our students, staff, families, and community remains at the forefront of every decision.

As disappointed as we all are with these circumstances, while campuses are closed, school is still in session and instruction will continue. Remote learning is a new experience and we are all learning during this time. Whether learning how to navigate the Google Classroom platform or how to avoid cabin fever, we recognize the many and varied challenges surrounding us these days. To assist with learning, we have added links to the student and parent Aeries portals that might help at home. We are enhancing and adding to these resources on an ongoing basis.

Thank you to our teachers, staff, and students who are demonstrating amazing creativity and out-of-the-box thinking to strengthen remote learning. Thank you also to the remarkable parents and caregivers at home for your responsiveness. Support, caring, and love for students, teachers, and families has been evident in so many ways via social media and other venues.

If you have any questions about assignments, please contact your child’s teacher(s). If you have additional questions in general about the school your child attends, please contact the principal/administrator via email. While our campuses are closed, we continue to work remotely and will respond in a timely fashion. School is in session and all teachers should have made contact with your child via a virtual platform. It is important for students to connect with his/her teachers and classmates daily. We need to keep our lines of communication and collaboration open.

I am proud of how our students, staff, and community have come together and found creative solutions to such a rapidly evolving, unprecedented challenge. I am encouraged that by working together we will rise to the challenge.

Update as of March 26

March 26, 2020

Dear GUSD Families,

Next week will be the first official week of Distance Learning for your child.  Your child’s teacher should be making daily contact via email, Google Classroom or a platform that has been utilized in the classroom for communication.  This will look different for each teacher as they are navigating new territory.  We ask that you are patient, ask questions, if you have them, and let staff or your principal know if you are having difficulty accessing any of the tools or links provided.

If your child is an elementary age student, the learning will need to be heavily guided and supported by the home.  Since the instruction will be 1:1 or small group, (depending on how many children in the home), caretakers will find they may be completed earlier than a typical school day. That is very normal and okay.  At the secondary level, student learning will be more independent, but the caregiver does need to make sure students are checking in and participating and/or completing what is being required by their teacher.

If the teacher is utilizing discussion boards, Zoom, or video, it is important that your child have a quiet location to engage in the learning. We understand when there is more than one child in the home this could be challenging, but it will insure the learning environment is maintained.  Please review  the conferencing guidelines attached and the technology use agreement that you signed at the beginning of the year with your child.  It is in the Student Information Handbook (pg. 36) on the District website at www.glendora.k12.ca.us

In addition, there are many parent resources on the District's webpage https://sites.google.com/glendora.k12.ca.us/gusdtechresources20/home .  Also, there are many online support tools for our most current textbooks, as well as software programs to help support student learning and support parents in helping their child(ren).

Please communicate with your teacher if you need additional support or are having difficulty accessing materials.  If you have forgotten your password or login to your student or parent portal, you can email lstawarz@glendora.k12.ca.us or kflores@glendora.k12.ca.us and they will help you.

Thank you
